Homemade Apple Pie Filling

Equipment

  • Medium Saucepan (2-3 Quarts)

Ingredients  

  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and diced (about 3 cups)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, optional
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch

Instructions 

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add diced apples, sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and lemon juice. Stir to coat the apples. Cook for about 8-10 minutes until the apples are soft but still hold their shape.
  • In a small bowl combine the water with the cornstarch and make a slurry.
  • Stir the cornstarch slurry into the apples and cook for another 1–2 minutes until the mixture thickens.
  • Remove from heat and let the filling cool to room temperature. Transfer to a storage jar or use it as a filling for your favorite pie or turnover.
